I’m excited to tell you guys that this summer I’m going to be interning with Giant Squid Books, a small indie publishing company based in D.C. that publishes YA fiction (yay!). Well, because I’m a little behind on this update, I actually already have started my internship. I’m psyched to be working with GSB’s editors and dipping my toes into the publishing world, as well as learning more about indie publishing!
So what will I be doing for them? Well, as their Social Media/Marketing Intern, among other things, I will be writing for their blog. I’ll be writing roundup posts of interesting links across the internet every week (where I’ll surely be featuring some of my favorite blog posts I’ve seen throughout the week!), discussion posts on YA and indie publishing, interviews , and GSB book news as it comes along. If you visit the blog, the current “This Week on the Internet” post was actually my first post for them!
I’ll also be posting to social media for them, working on getting their titles into libraries, schools, and bookstores across the area, working to set of book events, and attending book events. On the editorial side of things (which interests me most!), I’ll be reading manuscript submissions to GSB and writing reader’s reports on what they’re about and what I thought of them, as well as a bit of proofreading.
What does this mean for my blog? A few things — but you don’t have to worry, because I’ll definitely still be posting here! There may be some posts on my blog that will actually be cross-posted, meaning that I posted them first at the GSB blog and later on my own blog with a notice saying that it first appeared there. But my cross-posted posts will only be ones that I think you guys would also be interested in.
My own blog posts here are so special to me because I feel most able to express myself here on my own space. I like to write for myself, but I also love writing for you guys and being part of a small community within the book blogosphere that I feel I know. 🙂 I already know of so many post ideas that I feel would be better-suited to my own blog, so you all can expect many original posts to come!
I also have had an idea in the works for almost a year now (basically as long as I’ve had my blog) to start a new feature. I get really excited thinking about it, but there’s a lot of technical details I have to work out. I don’t want to give it away until I’ve developed it more fully and it debuts, but I will leave a few hints and say that it has to do with geography and will really bring my blog title and theme to life! 😉 Plus, I have my first blogiversary coming up in early June, so be ready for something fun!
I hope you all check out GSB’s website and explore a bit if you’re interested (especially in indie publishing)! There might be opportunities this summer for you guys to be involved if you’d like, such as reading/reviewing, blog tours, etc. so I’ll keep you guys posted and/or you can let me know if you’re interested. And if you guys want to know anything else about my internship/how I got it/tips (though I might not have all too many), leave a comment, email me, or hit me up on Twitter — I’d love to talk more!
It’ll certainly be a busy, book-filled summer for me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! So much love goes out to all of you that read my posts, comment, and generally add so much to the bookish community, thank you! <3 I hope you all have a lovely summer ahead of you.
