The name of this blog was inspired by Gabrielle Zevin’s wonderful book, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, whose back cover displays the adage: “No Man Is An Island; Every Book Is A World.” The meaning of this adage is something the main character A.J. Fikry discovers:
“The words you can’t find, you borrow.
We read to know we’re not alone. We read because we are alone. We read and we are not alone. We are not alone.”
I believe wholeheartedly in the power of books to expand our own little universes into something greater than just ourselves. In this way, every book truly is a world, one that allows us to experience all that the world has to offer and to know all that can be known; to live a thousand times over. And while no one can actually do and see everything — or live forever — many of us are fortunate enough to have the ability to read.
